History: Carlos the Scientist arrived in Night Vale some time ago...

Personality: Carlos is not a native of Night Vale; he is not indifferent to the strange and horrible events that occur regularly in the small town. The bizarre and sometimes terrifying phenomena fascinate and sometimes frighten him. During his first few months in Night Vale, he attempts to warn residents about alarming developments that don't seem to alarm the them as much as he thinks they should. For example, Cecil and the staff at the radio station are cheerfully uncaring about the fact that Cecil's mic is apparently highly radioactive.

Though keenly attentive to the safety of Night Vale residents, Carlos often doesn't consider his own safety when pursuing scientific questions, as when he descended into the underground city at the bowling lane to investigate it, not knowing what he would find. Work takes a lot of his focus, sometimes to the detriment of other parts of his life. He seems oblivious or willfully ignorant of Cecil's obvious interest in him and it's mentioned that he shoots down Cecil's requests for a date. This changes slightly after his near-death experience in One Year Later, after which he calls Cecil - for personal reasons - to invite him on a date. Despite this relaxation of his dedication, science remains important to Carlos's life. He's the kind of guy that likes scientifically accurate jokes and puns because the ones that aren't accurate just aren't that funny.

Despite taking more consideration for his life outside of his job, Carlos still tends to be reckless in pursuit of knowledge and answers, as the aforementioned near-death-experience illustrates. In another instance, Carlos gets himself trapped in the desert otherworld while studying the House That Doesn't Exist and he ends up delaying his return to Night Vale for ten years so that he can study his surroundings (though only a year passes in Night Vale). In pursuit of science, Carlos can be insensitive: all Cecil wants is for him to come home and be safe, whereas Carlos continually puts off his return in order to try to understand the phenomena of the otherworld. Despite keeping in touch with Cecil as often as he can, all he says is that he'll try to return "soon."

His definition of science ("I don't know, but I'm trying to find out, okay?") suggests both his love for his field and his frustration with the occasionally trying process of finding answers. But he wants those answers, no matter where the process takes him.

After a year in Night Vale, Carlos seems to have become less frightened of the phenomena he experiences. Rather than regularly raising the alarm (unless he feels it absolutely necessary), he remains fascinated by and curious about what he encounters. When he does feel any uncertainty, he tends to cover his it with his professionalism ("I'm fine... scientists are usually fine," he tells Cecil after being trapped in the desert otherworld). Despite this reassurance, he sounds genuinely distraught that he is not technically from Night Vale, and thus unable to return to it immediately. He confesses to being unable to remember how he got to Night Vale in the first place, but rather than causing distress, this seems to only reaffirm his desire to be there, with Cecil. If nothing else, Carlos worries about being permanently separated from Cecil.

Carlos is warm in his personal relationships and he respects and loves Cecil, even if he finds his boyfriend occasionally "overenthusiastic." While he is in the desert otherworld, he keeps in touch with Cecil frequently and is verbally affectionate. He tries to be careful with Cecil's feelings to the point where he hasn't mentioned that ten years passed for him in the desert otherworld, as he is concerned that it would upset and worry Cecil.

Deerington offers another place for Carlos to explore, as scientifically interesting and relevant as Night Vale - perhaps moreso, given the strange dream elements that seem to be making up their perceived reality. Maybe he will find something there that reminds him that he should be afraid. Very afraid.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping: Carlos seems to have some sort of resistance to mind control.
